Lauren Liebermann is an abstract artist whose work explores presence and the space between intention and instinct. Through layered painting and long-exposure photography, her practice invites viewers into moments of immersion—where emotion is felt rather than explained.
Her work is rooted in a lifelong pull toward making without expectation. As a child, Liebermann spent hours collaging, drawn to the clarity that comes when freedom and focus coexist. That balance continues to anchor her practice today, guiding an intuitive process that values openness and discovery.
Liebermann paints standing over canvases laid flat on the ground, using her hands, feet, and unconventional household tools to layer, scrape, and rebuild each composition. Her marks carry the energy of collage—fragments coming together to form something cohesive and new. The resulting paintings hold a sense of motion and stillness at once, offering spaces that feel equally expansive and grounded. Her photographic process captures that same impulse in real time. She uses long-exposure techniques and bodily movement to create luminous works that look as though light were painted across the frame.
Liebermann's work is held in public and private collections across the United States and internationally. Originally from Connecticut, she spent twenty years in New York City before settling in Montclair. She holds an MBA from Columbia University and a BA in Journalism from NYU.
